April 15, 2009 - Liverpool, UK - Hitman Book signing - Tom Williamson
This picture was taken at the Bret Hart book signing in Liverpool on April 15th. I arrived at 9am and despite the pouring down rain there was already a huge line which only increased as the day went on. Liverpool really came out in force to welcome Bret and we were extremely proud to have him visit our city. It so happened that Bret visited us on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpudlians lost their lives and it was an honour to meet a man who has also faced more than his share of loss and personal tragedy and has carried himself with nothing but dignity along the way. Of course when you come face to face with one of your all time heroes, its not easy to articulate how you feel and I, like many others no doubt, completely froze. Bret was a class act. Sensing my nerves, Bret actually tried to engage me in small talk, asking me what I thought of his book. I managed to blurt out something about it being my favourite book, which in fairness, was at least true. When reading the book I really appreciated the way Bret was able to write about his friends and family with an honesty that acknowledged their flaws without diminishing his affection for them. But the real highlight for me was when Bret would write about his relationship with Owen. When I first read the book over a year ago I had not spoke to my own brother in several months after a heated argument. Reading Bret’s affectionate tales of Owen, from the road trips to being stranded at sea, made me realize how precious such relationships can be. I’m proud to say that I attended this signing with my brother and for that I have Bret to thank.
